With funding from the American Cancer Society and $100,000 from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the agency is exploring the idea of a 10-year incubator to help with the growing need for pediatric cancer specialists.
"The concept has a lot of potential, there is so many possibilities so you can try it out," she said. "It's a way to try things out. You can get a child interested, it could help them move to a better environment and see if they can live with it, and hopefully they can get to a point with it.
"There's an incredible amount of research over there that can be done so there's so much potential."
The agency is also experimenting with its own incubator, which has so far raised $20,000 with a minimum goal of one year on the $100,000 grant. The lab uses a bioreactor, a piece of equipment that acts as a generator that is connected to a microbe and can be shut down.
An incubator also allows for a lot more room for growth in an area where one of the drugs can be abused.
